Dear James,

thank you for the update. 33 submissions is not bad for a virtual AIW. If the AIW would have been in person in Cyprus, you might have got more papers, I guess.

If you want more papers, you should think about prolonging the deadline of the CFP and encourage historians and ethnologists to send in paper suggestions.

Best

Renate

Betreff: Conference update

Dear colleagues –

Today was the deadline for submissions for the Sovereign Erotic conference, so I thought I would quickly update you on progress.

In total, we have received 33 submissions, including 4 for complete panels/roundtables. In addition, I have lined up three keynote speakers.  I will go through the submissions in more detail over the next couple of weeks, but my initial impression is that just about all of them are of sufficient quality to include. All are on the conference theme (apart from one roundtable on the work of Cherokee jurist and memoirist Steve Russell, who I think would be tickled to find himself being discussed in this context!). So I’m happy that this will be a strong conference with a lot of engaged discussion.  However, it is fewer submissions than I had hoped for, so I may end up making some changes to the original conference design to allow for longer individual papers.

There was an unfortunate snafu, however, and one that was entirely my own fault: in placing the CFP on the UPenn site, I made an error with the form, giving the deadline as Jan 2020 (the correct year was given in the body of the CFP, but most people only look at the topline date).  I only noticed this error in December, and so took the decision to extend the deadline there until January 18th.  Hopefully this will generate a couple more submissions.

I’m disappointed not to have received more submissions from historians and ethnologists. If any of you know of academics in those fields who might be interested in submitting, I’m happy to receive additional abstracts past the submission date.

I’ll keep you updated as things move along.

Kind regards

James
